Semantics & Baseball

This assignment was given in Dr. Saundra Wright's English 477 Semantics class. The work aimed to develop a student's awareness of social, spatial, temporal, and person deixis as well as develop a student's understanding of language.

The text analyzed in this assignment was a non-literary text from an ESPN article about the World Series. The content and interpretations of the article's language was analyzed throughout the entire paper. The paper also comments on the basic principles of language, which can be more specifically noted in the ways that semantics, and language markers such as "had" can influence a reader's interpretation of meaning. Using the different deixis lenses, a reader can construct new meanings within the reading and understand how language can influence a person's understanding of a text.
